Sculpted in the Red Rocks

For this project I took inspiration from the large rock structures and canyon walls that surround the lake in Arizona my moms family travels to every year. It is home to some of the best memories. After 50 years and 5 generations of summer trips, it feels like it's a part of us. The solitude of being miles deep into the canyons surrounded by nothing but calm towering walls, red tan beaches, and gray blue water, brings moments of quiet inspiration. We’ve stayed in the same canyon every year for most of my life, seeing the familiar structures, shapes, details that we’ve recognized for years. Landmarks in our memory, that keep us enclosed and in the moment, framing our trips. Sediment lines and layers, erosion and cliffs from fluctuating water levels, arches and domes and towers that almost seem too perfect to be natural, like mother nature's sculptures. For this project I was inspired to embody their strength, sculptural forms, juxtaposed fluid organic shapes and earthy textures and colors into my designs. Using the theme of pattern found at Lake Powell I will experiment between shapes and unique material textures while maintaining the earthy integrity of the actual place.
